In the February 2017 issue of Food Chemistry, scientists from Chile and Canada published “Effective Lactobacillus plantarum and Bifidobacterium infantis encapsulation with chia seed (Salvia hispanica L.) and flaxseed (Linum usitatissimum L.) mucilage and soluble protein by spray drying”. The scientists used Spectra/Por® dialysis tubing to dialyze flaxseed soluable protein and chia seed protein, and the 6-8 kDa Spectra/Por membrane was used for each process.

The purpose of the study was to evaluate chia seed and flaxseed proteins for microencapsulation of probiotic bacteria to aid digestive problems.

Abstract: Mucilage (M) and soluble protein (SP) extracted from chia seed and flaxseed were used as encapsulating material for two probiotic bacteria: Bifidobacterium infantis and Lactobacillus plantarum by spray drying. Probiotic survival and viability after spray drying and during storage were evaluated. Click here to read the article.

Spectra/Por® 1 – 4 Standard RC Ready-to-Use Dialysis Sacks are designed for the general dialysis of larger sample volumes, and consists of a 60 cm length of Spectra/Por 1, 2, 3 or 4 tubing, sealed at one end with a Spectra/Por Closure and a funnel attached to the other for easy filling.
