Scientists in partnership with the University of Florida, the State University of New Jersey, and Colorado State University wrote a paper for the July 2013 issue of Applied and Environmental Microbiology. In the paper, titled “Predicting Salmonella Populations from Biological, Chemical, and Physical Indicators in Florida Surface Waters”, the researchers used the KRII and polyethersulfone (PES) hollow fiber modules to concentrate water samples for Salmonella detection in Florida.
The scientists investigated whether detecting indicator organisms predicted the presence of human pathogens (Salmonella) in water supplies.
Abstract: Coliforms, Escherichia coli, and various physicochemical water characteristics have been suggested as indicators of microbial water quality or index organisms for pathogen populations. The relationship between the presence and/or concentration of Salmonella and biological, physical, or chemical indicators in Central Florida surface water samples over 12 consecutive months was explored.
